
The medieval town of Cherven was built along the hard-to-reach banks of the Black Lom river, which today falls within the boundaries of the Rusenski Lom nature park. The city began its existence in the 6th century as a Roman municipality, when it reached its heyday in the 14th century, within the borders of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.
