The church "St. Nicholas" is the largest and oldest church in Leipzig. The architectural form and interior decoration of the temple is a wonderful example of neoclassicism. It was built in 1165 in the Romanesque style and in the following centuries underwent many changes, the last one was in 1901 - 1902.
In the autumn of 1989, the church was one of the most important places of the peaceful opposition against the communist regime in the GDR, which is reminded of by the monument in the center of the square in front of the church in the form of a column with palm leaves.
