Candalaria is an important historical Roman Catholic church located in Rio de Janeiro, in Southeastern Brazil. The church was built and decorated between 1775 and the end of the 19th century and is dedicated to the Virgin. According to the locals, the history of the foundation of the church begins at the beginning of the 17th century, when a ford called Candalaria soon sank during a storm at sea. A couple survived and upon arriving in Rio de Janeiro decided to sponsor the construction of a small chapel, fulfilling the vow they had made during the storm.
