The citadel was built by the Habsburgs in 1851 as a symbol of Habsburg control and superiority over the Hungarians. Gellert Hill is a strategic place for observation of the two cities - Budim and Pest. The citadel was equipped with 60 cannons and was used more for intimidation than as a functioning fortress. After the collapse of Austria-Hungary, the Hungarians wanted to destroy the citadel, but instead it became a tourist center in the middle of the 20th century. An incredible panoramic view of the city opens from the numerous terraces.
