Teotihuacan, an ancient religious capital of the Aztecs, is located 48 km northeast of today's capital, Mexico. Built between the 1st and 7th centuries, the city is characterized by the enormous size of monuments, especially the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. As one of the most powerful cultural centers in Central America, Teotihuacan spread its cultural influence throughout the region and beyond. According to scientists, it was the largest city in America and sixth in the world in its time, with a population of about 125,000 inhabitants. Today it is the most visited archaeological site in Mexico. Teotihuacan was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
