Esztergom is the spiritual center of Hungary and seat of the Catholic Church, but also the first capital and hometown of King Saint Stephen - the creator of the Hungarian kingdom. The oldest fortress built here dates back to 972, and the royal chapel is one of the symbols of Esztergom - the rosettes are from the 12th century. The basilica - the most impressive church in Hungary - is remarkable for the painting behind the altar, which depicts the Assumption - the largest oil canvas in the world, as well as for its rich vault.
