The building of the Old Municipality was built in the 16th century with funds set aside for the construction of walls around the city. This decision of the city governors - to build a new building instead of defense facilities, was disastrous for The Hague: during the Eighty Years' War, the city was unable to defend itself from the Spanish troops. At the end of the war, the building was used as the headquarters of the city administration for four centuries, where it was expanded and restored several times. Since the end of the last century, the building has been used for marriage ceremonies, and the city authorities are stationed in a new snow-white building, which is located in the modern center of the city.
