The ancient Greek city of Stagira was founded in 655 BC. from the Ionian settlers from the island of Andros. The ancient city (sometimes called Stagyros in the feminine gender) was located about 7 km north of today's village in the direction of the Olympiad. Aristotle was born in Stagira in 384. The city was conquered and destroyed by Philip II of Macedon. As a sign of gratitude to Aristotle, who became the teacher of his son Alexander the Great, Philip renovated the city and settled the old inhabitants, whom he had enslaved in the past. A number of new buildings were erected during that period, including an aqueduct, two sanctuaries of Demeter, and many homes.
