On one of the oldest squares in Strasbourg, in the past used as a market for herbs and spices, stands the monument to Johann Gutenberg - the creator of the modern printing press. Gutenberg, despite being born in Mainz, spent 20 years of his life in Strasbourg and perfected his machine here in the period 1436-1437. The central statue is the work of David D'Angerode 1840, and on the side bas-reliefs the benefits that this discovery brings to humanity are shown. On this square is also the building of the old municipality of the city - now Stopsanka Komara, recognized as one of the most beautiful Renaissance examples in Strasbourg.
