
Segovia is located in Castilla y León and has a population of 55,000. The city was founded by the Romans, but was abandoned after the Arab attacks. At the end of the 11th century it was repopulated by the Castilians. Among the sights of Segovia are the Aqueduct, the Alcazar and the cathedral. The aqueduct was built in the 1st century and is one of the best-preserved and most impressive Roman buildings on the Iberian Peninsula. Alcazar is a fortress from the 12th century, it was the royal residence of Alfonso X. The Cathedral of Santa Maria is considered the last Gothic cathedral in Spain, it was built in 1768. Segovia is on the UNESCO list for the protection of world cultural heritage.
