Росток е расположен од двете страни на устието на река Варнов во Балтичко Море. Со своите 208 илјади жители тој се реди на првоместо по големина во провинцијата Макленбург-Предна Померанија.
The name of the city is of Slavic origin. About 1,400 years ago, Slavic tribes occupied this area. Then the Kesini tribe built a village on the eastern bank of the Varnov River and built a fortress for protection from enemies. They called this part "rastok", which literally means "spill of a river". In the 12th century, during the Crusades, the fortress was burned down when the axis of the Danish king Valdemar I struck the Slavic tribes in Mecklenburg and Pomerania. A few years later, the area was settled by German merchants and craftsmen. Thus began the dynamic history of the city, whose name has been preserved to this day.
