Помпеја

Помпеj, Италија

In 79 AD Pompeii was a picturesque Roman city located in the vicinity of Naples. 20,000 inhabitants of Pompeii unknowingly lived on the slopes of an active volcano. They were not prepared for the tragedy, the sudden darkening of the sky, the constant shower of lava. It is believed that only about 1000 people were saved. But for those who delayed the escape or hoped that the eruption would pass quickly, the outcome was fatal. The ruins of the vanished city are preserved for generations under the red lava. Today, these remains are known all over the world, but their discovery began only in the 18th century. What archaeologists have found is a clear imprint of the ancient Roman world.
