
Republic Square is located in the capital city of Yerevan. The project was the work of Aleksandar Tamanjan and construction began in 1926. The square was completed in 1958. For a long time its name was "Lenin" and a monument to the Soviet leader stood in the center of the square. In 1990 it was removed and replaced by a large television screen.
Republic Square is a venue for various ceremonies related to Armenian national holidays.
Within the square are also the buildings of the National Art Gallery, the History Museum, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Armenian Government.
