Piazza Duomo is the central square of the city of Catania, Sicily. There are many historical and architectural buildings on it: the Palazzo deli Elephante, where the city council is stationed, the Cathedral of Saint Agatha, the Palazzo dei Chierici.
In the central part of the square there is a symbol of the city of Catania – the Fountain of the Elephant, which represents a figure of a smiling elephant, made of black volcanic stone, carrying an obelisk on its back, together with a Christian cross, a lily and palm trees. Legend has it that these lion statues, also called Liotru, have the ability to calm the restless volcano Etna.
