Pyrgos was the capital of the island of Santorini until 1800. The village has the traditional style of architecture for the island, and the streets are in the shape of the rock on which it is located.
Placed a bit further from the famous caldera, Pyrgos is not swamped by sunset lovers, nor is it the first choice among the hordes of cruise-ship passengers. Its charisma is different - more tranquil, less picture-perfect, less advertised.
However, it is located 8 km southeast of Thira and offers an incredible panoramic view of the entire island.
