The picturesque city of Patras is the third largest in Greece. It is located on the Gulf of Corinth, on the Peloponnese peninsula. The population is 160,000. From the past to the present it is known as the "West Gate". The most famous tourist attractions are the churches of St. Andrew, Pantokrator and the Byzantine Church, the statue of Zeus and the Archaeological Museum. The city of Patras hosts the biggest carnival in Greece. It is organized three Sundays before Easter and dates back to 1829, but locals believe that the carnival dates back to the time of the ancient Greeks in honor of Dionysius, the god of wine. Since the 19th century, a carnival began to take place every year.
