Back in the 13th century, when these lands were owned by the Dutch counts, their residence was built here. In 1435, power passed into the hands of the residents of Delft and the functioning court complex was transformed into a municipality. Due to the constant growth of the city, the building was expanded and took the form of a block built around the old prison tower located in the center of the complex. Completely destroyed by fire in 1536, it was renovated in the form in which we see it today according to the design of the Dutch architect Hendrik de Kaiser. His project for a voluminous building with a well-decorated facade and numerous windows was completed in 1620.
