Nafplion is an ancient city and the first capital of Greece (1829 - 1834) after liberation from Turkish slavery. It is known for the walls that surround the city, built in different periods - from the classical era to the Ottoman rule. It is one of the oldest cities in Greece - it has existed since the past and was inherited by Carians, Phoenicians and ancient Egyptians. The city is known for its three fortresses - Burtzi, Palamidi and Akronafplia. The walls of the city form a large complex in which the history of the city can be heard. Nafplio represents an eclectic mix of Venetian, Ottoman and Greek architecture. The first Greek Charles - Otto I, son of Ludwig of Bavaria - was crowned here.
