The city is based in the western part of the island of Sicily in the province of Trapani. The city is known for its wine - Marsala, as well as for the nature reserve Laguna Stagnone - a sea region with salt lakes. 

The territory of Marsala has a rich natural and cultural heritage with a historical past that dates back to the IV century BC. Marsala was built on the ruins of the ancient Carthaginian city of Lilibeum. The territory is located on the archaeological area, the island of Motia, where there was an ancient Phoenician city ones.
