Clonmacnoa Abbey is situated in County Offaly on the River Shannon. It was founded in 545 by St. Ciaran, who built the first church - a small wooden structure and the first of many small churches in the monastery. The Oath was the period when Christianity flourished in Ireland and the monasteries fulfilled the role of towns. In "Clonmacnoa" you can see round towers, remains of churches and Celtic crosses with intricate designs, all picturesquely located on the banks of the River Shannon.
