
Maastricht is a city in the Netherlands, one of the two oldest cities in the country, along with Nijmegen. It is the administrative center of the province of Limburg. The city is located by the Meuse River. It has a population of 120,000.
Maastricht was founded in 50 BC. from the Romans and that is why the name has Latin roots and means "along the river Meuse". In 382, Bishop Servatius built his residence here and became the first bishop of the city.
In today's Maastricht there are many preserved historical monuments of culture. The building of the city court was built in 1475 and became of great importance for the city. The "Gates of Hadot" were known there in the past, on the remains of which the building was built. Also important attractions are the church "Sint Servaskers", the church "Onze live Vrau" and many other old churches and monasteries.
In 1992, the Maastricht Treaty, known not only in the European Union, was signed here, which according to its essence is an official treaty for the EU, signed between the then 12 member states and which regulates the formation of a political and economic union.
