Kasbou Ait Benhandou is a fortress at the foot of the High Atlas, in the province of Ouarzazate. The fort is an example of southern Moroccan architecture as well as Moroccan clay architecture. According to scholars, Kasbu Ait Benhandu was built around the 17th century, because the oldest structures do not appear to have been built earlier than the 17th century. Centuries ago, merchants lived in the fortress, because it connected them from the old Sudan to Marrakesh. Today, several families still live there. Although it has the appearance of an old building, the fort is a familiar location for filming. Some of the most famous movies filmed here are: "Mummy" and "Gladiator". Kasbou Ait Benhandou was recognized by UNESCO in 1987.
