The town of Candelaria, or as it was called in the past Villa Mariana de Candelaria, is a municipality and a city in the eastern part of the island of Tenerife. The city is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, about 17 km. southwest of the capital of the island - Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The population is about 25,140 people, and the area is 49.18 square kilometers.
The city is declared the main center of the Catholics of Spain and Latin America, because it is a place where the Virgin of Candelaria, patroness of the Canary Islands, is venerated. The most famous building in the city is the Basilica of Candelaria, in which there is an altar with the figure of the Virgin of Candelaria. The main attraction in the city, besides the basilica, are the statues of the nine Aboriginal Guanche kings located on the shore.
