Kaloni is the capital of the municipality of the same name on the island of Lesbos. With around 9 000 inhabitants, the municipality is the second largest on the island. The coast of Kaloni has a picturesque harbor and many beautiful and well-organized beaches that attract a large number of Greek and foreign tourists. In the summer months, a festival is organized here, offering tons of fresh grilled shrimp and ouzo. 14 km from Kaloni is the male monastery "Limonos", founded in 1526. To the southeast of the city there are salt mines, where salt is extracted from sea water. The 10-12 meter high piles of salt can be seen from afar, and the environment around them is home to exotic birds such as flamingos, herons and black storks.
