Cayo Santa Maria is part of the Jardines del Rey (Royal Gardens) archipelago. The island itself is small - its length is about 16 km, the width is 2 m, and it is located north of the main island of Cuba. All the hotels and beaches are located along its northern coast, while the southern one is covered with mud and mangroves. The island is connected by the 48-kilometer highway to the mainland near the town of Kaibaren. The construction of the bridge began in 1989 and ended ten years later.
