Женевско Езеро

Женева, Швејцарија

Lake Geneva is the largest lake on the territory of Switzerland and France. It is located on the border between Western Switzerland and the French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The lake is crescent-shaped, 72 km long and 14 km wide, and at its deepest point it is 310 m.

In France the lake is called Leman. This name is of Celtic origin and is derived from the words lem and an (Mac.: big water, i.e. lake). The inhabitants of Geneva have called it after the city since the Middle Ages. In 1592, Francois Bonivard mentioned the lake as Léman, but added the clarification "which is our Lake Geneva". Since the city became more accustomed to this name of the lake, this toponym was also used for translations into other languages.
