
The city of Elbasan is located along the river Shkumbini and is one of the largest cities in the country with a population of 120,000 inhabitants.
The existence of the city dates back to the 1st century under the name Skampa. Since the 15th century it has been known under the name Elbasan. There are many immigrants in the city, among whom some are Bulgarians. In 1466, the fortress of Elbasan was built, and the following year the city was subjected to an unsuccessful siege by Skenderbeg.
