
Edirne, historically called Adrianople, is a city in the European part of Turkey, near the borders with Bulgaria and Greece. The city was founded by the Roman emperor Hadrian on the site of the old Thracian village and was named after him - Adrianopolis, after the Greek city of Hadrian. The city was captured by the Ottoman Turks in 1369 and served as their capital until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Edirne is the capital of a modern province with the same name and has a population of about 130,000 inhabitants. It is known for the mosque of Sultan Selim II, built by Sinan in 1575.
