Siena's Ascension Cathedral is one of the most significant examples of Gothic architecture in Italy. It was built in the 13th century from white and black marble, and red marble was added to the facade. White and black are symbolic colors for Siena and are associated with the white and black horse of the city's founders, Senio and Askio. In the interior of the temple, the beautifully decorated cabinet, known for its artistic expressiveness of mosaics on the floor, and the statue of John the Baptist, sculpted by Donatello, are especially impressive.
