The Valley of the Kings is located in Egypt, where for a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to the 11th century BC, rock tombs were excavated for the pharaohs and nobles of the New Kingdom. The valley is located on the west bank of the Nile River, opposite today's Luxor, in the heart of the Theban Necropolis. The valley is divided into two, the Eastern Valley (where most of the royal tombs are located) and the Western Valley. In the heart is also the tomb of Tutankhamun. There are 63 tombs discovered so far, the last tombs found were in 2008. The valley became part of the UNESCO cultural heritage in 1979.
