
Garni is a village in Armenia, located 28 km. southeast of the capital Yerevan. It is located in the valley of the river Azat and has a population of about 8,000 inhabitants.
The most famous landmark is the historical-architectural complex, which includes a preserved pagan temple and the remains of a wall. The fortress was built in the 3rd century BC. on an artificial triangular plateau next to the river, and in place of the fourth a wall with a height of 26 meters with 14 towers was erected.
The wall, destroyed by the Romans, was renovated by King Tiridates I in the 1st century, who built a temple of Bogot to the sun - Mithra. Today, the complex consists of the ruins of the fortress with walls, the pagan temple of Mithras, the remains of the palace and the typical Roman baths with mosaics on the floor.
The Garni Historical Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
