Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a municipality and administrative center of the district of the same name in Bavaria. Despite its population of just over 27,000 inhabitants, Garmisch-Partenkirchen does not have city status. It is located in a beautiful valley, surrounded by the mountain massifs of the Bavarian Alps, and in the immediate vicinity is the highest point of Germany - the Zugspitze peak.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen was formed in 1935 by the merger of the two villages of Garmisch and Partenkirchen. In 1936, the IV Winter Olympic Games were held here. The next Olympic Games (1940) were also planned to be held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but were canceled due to the outbreak of war. Sports traditions continue to flourish even after the war - in 1978 and 2011, the World Alpine Ski Championships were held here.
