At 1,277 m above sea level, rises the only active volcano on the territory of Europe. Its crater is 217 m deep and 1,400 m wide.
The diameter of its base is more than 3 km. Vesuvius has erupted periodically for more than 12,000 years. The most famous eruption of Vesuvius was in 79 AD, when the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii were destroyed. Most of the inhabitants of Pompeii were buried under the destroyed buildings and layers of volcanic ash or were suffocated by poisonous gases.
Nowadays, Vesuvius is on the list of UNESCO nature reserves.
