Valona is the second largest port in Albania, after the city of Durres. The city is located on a spacious bay opposite the Karaburun peninsula and is inhabited by more than 90,000 inhabitants. There is a ferry tour between Wallona and the Italian seaport towns of Brindisi and Otranto in Puglia. The Albanian Riviera begins from this city - near Valona, the Ionian and Mediterranean Seas meet. Valona is also the seat of the Albanian National Assembly, which declared Albania's independence from the Ottoman Empire on November 28, 1912.
