The Burgundian kingdom occupied the present-day borderlands between Switzerland, France and Italy. The Burgundian state consisted of many dominions on both sides of the border between the Kingdom of France and the German Empire, the economic core of which was the Netherlands, especially Flanders and Brabant. In 534, the Franks defeated Godomar, the settled king of the Burgundians, and included his lands in their state. In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Burgundy became the basis for the rise of the Habsburgs after Maximilian of Austria succeeded to the crown.
