The Bosphorus is a strait that connects the Marmara and Black Seas and separates the European part of Turkey (Rumelia) from the Asian part (Anatolia). Its name comes from the Greek language, which means "the passing of the river". The coastline of the Bosphorus is about 30 km. The maximum width of its northern part is 3,700 m. Two bridges cross the Bosphorus - "Boazici" (1074 m), built in 1973 and "Fatih Sultan Mehmed" (1090 m). It has been scientifically proven that the Bosphorus was formed 7,500 years ago.
