Herodotus - the "father of history" was born in Halicarnassus (the old name of Bodrum) in 484 BC. According to him, Bodrum was founded by the Dorians in the 12th century BC. The next settlers were the Carians and the Lelegians. In 546 BC the city fell under Persian rule. At the beginning of the 4th century BC the area of Caria was governed by the ruler of Hekatomnos and his son Mossol. This is the most brilliant period in the development of Bodrum. After the death of King Mossol, Caria was ruled by his wife and sister Artemisia II. In his honor, she built the Halicarnassus Mausoleum - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
