
The Bachkovo Monastery is located on the left bank of the Chaya River, in the immediate vicinity of the town of Asenovgrad. It was founded in 1083 by the Georgian Grigoriy Bakuriani. During its existence, the monastery played an important role in the spread of Orthodoxy and the preservation of Bulgarian writing and culture. Today it is the second largest monastery and is of great importance. It is surrounded by picturesque nature and is located in the immediate vicinity of the "Crvena Stena" reserve. The monastery complex includes three temples and a refectory. One of the most significant miraculous icons of the Holy Mother of God is kept in the main church.
