Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia and is the administrative center of the province of Barcelona, ​​with a population of 1,605,602. The second largest city in Spain has hosted many international events, including the International Exhibitions of 1888 and 1929 and the XXV Summer Olympic Games in 1992. According to one legend, the city was founded by the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, but according to another - by Hercules. One of his fords, the Barca Nona (ninth ford), wrecked near the present-day Hill of Montjuic. A city named Barcelona was founded in that place.

 

Barcelona is known for its modern architecture from the time of Antoni Gaudí, the not yet finished Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, the Gothic quarter, the football club of the same name, beaches and active nightlife.
