The Baptistery of Pisa, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is the greatest in the world. The beautiful oval building is located in Piazza dei Miracoli - Square of Miracles. This separation of the baptistery from the church is something characteristic of the Italians, so according to their traditions, people who were not baptized did not dare to enter the church itself. The construction of the Baptistery began in 1152 and was barely completed in 1260 by Niccolò Pisano. A long period of construction is the reason for the resulting combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles.
