The historic center of Altamura contains the authentic architecture of the city. Typical of it are the 200 "claustri" - small square courtyards, around which the homes with characteristic arches, vaults, terraces are located.
The impressive cathedral is the only church in Puglia built at the request of Frederick II.
In Altamura there is a museum where the skeleton of the "Man of Altamura" is exhibited, discovered in 1993 in the Lamalunga cave. The skeleton is of an adult male 160-165 cm tall and is in excellent condition and is in all probability about 250,000 years old.
The town is also known for its baked goods, especially "pane di Altamura". Altamura Bread is not only bread, but a baking tradition passed down through generations. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, and its production method has remained largely unchanged- local durum wheat flour, kneaded with water, salt, and yeast and left to leaven.
The bread is then baked in artisanal wood-fired ovens till the crust is crispy and golden, while the crumb is soft.
