Ávila is a city with a population of 50,000 inhabitants in the autonomous region of Castile and León. The city was founded by the Romans, and in the Middle Ages the fortresses were built, which today are the largest illuminated landmark in the world. Ávila is known as the "city of stones and saints", as well as the birthplace of mysticism and Saint Teresa, founder of the Carmelite Order. The holidays dedicated to Teresa of Avila are held every year in the month of October. The old part of Ávila preserves a large number of Romanesque and Gothic churches and has been part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 1985.
