Џамијата Ел Карауин

Фес, Мароко

El Karaouin is the largest mosque in Fez and the second largest in Morocco. It was founded between 857 and 859 by the daughter of a rich refugee from the holy city of Kairouan. The daughter was educated and decided that in addition to being a place of worship, Al Qaraween should also be a place of education. Thus Al Qaraween became an institution of education. Around 1957, King Mohammed V added additional subjects such as chemistry, physics, mathematics and foreign languages. In 1963, the institution became a modern state university. According to the UNESCO cultural heritage, Al Kataween is the oldest continuously functioning educational institution in the world, in which one can obtain a first degree of training.
