It is believed that the city was founded in the 6th century by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. Throughout the Middle Ages, it was one of the centers of the Epirus despotism. People of three religions lived harmoniously in the city - Christians, Jews and Muslims, until Ali Pasha Janinski came to power in 1788. The town is located on Lake Pamvotida, where is the island of Nissi with the monastery of St. Panteleimon, where Ali Pasha was killed. Ioannina is known for its fortress and it houses the main attractions of the city - the tomb of Ali Pasha Janinski, the Fethiye Mosque, the Aslan Pasha Mosque, the clock tower and the Byzantine Museum.
