Zlatograd is located in the Southern part of the Rhodope mountains in the valley of the river Vrabnica, 6 km away from one of the border crossings between Bulgaria and Greece. The town is a beautiful example of a well-managed and developed mountain settlement. The most well-known attraction in Zlatograd is the Ethnographic areal complex. The idea came from an ethnographer from the Bulgarian academy of sciences called Boris Tomagelov and the realization was done by engineer Aleksander Milushev, who gave the financial and organizational support for its construction. It was officially opened on the 24th of May 2001, which is one of the national holidays. This is the first private ethnographic areal complex. Zlatograd today is a benchmark for ethnic and religious tolerance throughout the whole country.
