Persepolis

Persepolis is a historical city in southwestern Iran. The settlement was the capital of the ancient Persian Empire. Persepolis is the Greek name for the Persian city of Parsa. The ruins are located 70 km away. northeast of the Iranian city of Shiraz and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is believed that the original construction of the city began in 515 BC. by King Darius I. The city was burned in 330 BC. from the troops of Alexander the Great. Soon after, it was abandoned and the capital moved to the neighboring city of Istakhr. On the site of the ancient settlement today there is a monumental staircase called the apadana and the remains of about 40 other buildings. In the treasury of the ancient palace there are clay tablets with cuneiform writing, which reflect the reign of the Persian Empire.
