Lalibela is renowned for its rock-hewn churches, which were carved out of solid rock in the 12th century under the reign of King Lalibela. These churches are considered one of Ethiopia's greatest architectural achievements and are also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The most famous of these churches is the Church of St. George (Bete Giyorgis), which is shaped like a cross and is a pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, especially during the Ethiopian Christmas and other religious festivals.. Lalibela is often referred to as the "New Jerusalem" and is a significant center for religious tourism.
