
The Roman temple Capitolium, based in Brescia, together with the theater and the ruins of the forum, is the most significant archaeological complex in northern Italy.
The Capitolium was built in 1st century AD on the site of a former temple dating back to the period of the Roman Republic. The structure was erected by Emperor Vespasian after his battle with the General Vitellio.
The temple was demolished by fire during the barbarian invasions in the 4th century AD and it was was moderately rebuilt centuries later between 1935 and 1938.
It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.
