Axum is an ancient city in northern Ethiopia and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and was the capital of the Axumite Empire, which thrived from approximately 100 AD to 940 AD. It is famous for its monumental obelisks, which are believed to mark the graves of ancient kings. The city is also home to the Church of St. Mary of Zion, which is said to house the Ark of the Covenant, making it a significant pilgrimage site. Axum's archaeological sites, including the ruins of oncient palaces and tombs, reflect its historical significance as a trading empire that connected Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.
