Alexandria

Александриja, Египет

Alexandria is a port city on the Mediterranean Sea in northern Egypt founded in 331 BCE by Alexander the Great, who established the city from a small port known as “Rhakotis”. It was the site of the Pharos lighthouse (part of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world), and the legendary Library of Alexandria and was once the most crucial cultural center of the ancient world. Under the Ptolemaic Dynasty (323-30 BCE) the city turned into an intellectual, cultural, and commercial core.

Alexandria came under Roman rule in 30 B.C.E. and later Arab rule in 642 C.E., when the new capital Cairo was developed.

In 1517 Alexandria was defeated again, this time by the Turks.

Alexandria revived as a trade center in the 1800s after canals were built to link the city to the Nile River. Today Alexandria remains a charming harbor city with a rich heritage.
